NARVIK
GREEN AMMONIA

Enabling the decarbonisation of European industry at scale

Narvik Green Ammonia is a joint development led by Aker Horizons. The project aims to leverage access to green power in Northern Norway to produce ammonia at a large scale for export to European markets, and for enabling domestic use.

NARVIK GREEN AMMONIA PROJECT

Facility Narvik

The project will be developed close to Bjerkvik, located in the Narvik municipality, where hydrogen will be produced through electrolysis and later converted to ammonia through the introduction of nitrogen. The plant will have a planned capacity of 400-600 MW and will be one of the first large-scale plants for green ammonia in Europe. The ammonia will be offloaded via a terminal located on the coast close to the production facility and delivered by ship to European customers.

The Narvik facility also presents an opportunity to supply the maritime sector locally with clean fuel, supporting Norway’s ambition to take the lead in the green industrial transition.

NARVIK

The town of Narvik, located just above the Arctic Circle, is set between mountains and fjords, with a deep-water, year-round ice-free harbour credited to the Gulf Stream. The town rose to prominence in the 19th century when it became the preferred port to export iron ore from mines in Northern Sweden, with the development of a rail connection. Narvik’s strategic port, needed for the delivery of iron ore for German steel production, made it a target during World War II. Narvik’s export facilities are still in operation today, exporting more than 20 million tonnes of iron ore per year.

Narvik Green Ammonia (NGA) recognises the strategic importance and storied history of Narvik. The companies, which represent two of Norway’s leading energy players, aim to build a green ammonia production facility, converting renewable power into ammonia to meet European demand for non-fossil fuels.
